A deadly collapse at the crumbling Sekondi Market has reignited urgent calls from traders and their MP for the government to honour its promise of a full redevelopment.
The appeal comes after portions of the market collapsed on Monday, October 6, 2025, killing one trader and injuring others.
Member of Parliament (MP) for Sekondi, Blay Nyamekye Armah, has called on President John Dramani Mahama and Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson to make the project a top priority, stressing that continued neglect could lead to more deaths and injuries.
“President Mahama and Hon. Ato Forson, please have mercy on our market women, our mothers, who have suffered for 32 years. Sekondi is crying out. People are dying, crying, and getting injured. Mr. President, show compassion and rebuild this market for us,” the MP pleaded.
He also appealed to Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, urging her to intervene and remind the President to honour his campaign promise.
Traders interviewed expressed frustration over the government’s inaction, warning that their livelihoods and lives remain at risk.
“We are pleading with the government to come to our aid. Many of us are in debt and need safe spaces to trade to pay off what we owe. The market is dangerous, and we need immediate redevelopment,” one of the traders said.
They stressed that after decades of waiting, the people of Sekondi deserve a market that is safe, modern, and fit for business.
