Residents of Manso Nyankomase in the Amansie South District of the Ashanti Region have taken to the streets to protest what they describe as ongoing military brutalities in their community.
Chanting and holding placards, the demonstrators marched through the town before presenting a petition to the District Chief Executive.
They called for immediate government intervention and asked for the petition to be forwarded to President John Dramani Mahama.
The tension stems from the arrival of an unidentified company that reportedly began land reclamation activities in the area without consulting local leaders.
According to residents, soldiers guarding the company clashed with community members who tried to prevent the operation. The confrontation resulted in injuries to at least five people.
Speaking during the protest, Kwabena Yeboah, one of the community leaders, said the situation has created fear among residents.
“We don’t even know the name of the company or who sent them here. Our people only asked questions and were beaten. This is our land, and we deserve to be informed,” he said.
The residents are demanding that the military personnel be withdrawn and that the company officially explain its presence and purpose in the area. They also fear that if no action is taken, the unrest could escalate further.
The District Chief Executive has acknowledged receipt of the petition, but no official statement has yet been made by the military or the unnamed company.
