Public transport fares to rise by 20% from August 8

Public transport fares across Ghana will increase by 20% effective Friday, August 8, 2025, following a directive from the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), issued in collaboration with major transport unions.

The announcement, made in line with the Administrative Arrangement on Public Transport Fares, was signed by Emmanuel Ohene-Yeboah, General Secretary, and Alhaji Tanko, Acting National Chairman of the Council.

According to the statement, the fare adjustment has become necessary due to three major developments that have significantly increased the operational costs for transport operators.

First, despite a 15% fare reduction introduced on May 21, 2025, the cost of spare parts and other inputs has not decreased as expected.

Operators say they continue to pay high prices for essential goods and services.

Second, the recent introduction of a GH¢1.00 per litre fuel levy has triggered an estimated 8% rise in fuel prices, directly impacting running costs for drivers and transport companies.

Third, worsening road conditions nationwide have led to a spike in vehicle maintenance expenses, adding to the financial burden on transport operators.

The 20% increase will apply across the board, including shared taxis, intra-city “trotro” services, long-distance intercity travel, and cargo haulage.

“All commercial transport operators and companies are required to comply with the new fares and ensure they are clearly displayed at loading terminals,” the statement stated.

The Council also urged commuters and the general public to cooperate to ensure a smooth rollout of the revised fares.

The most recent fare adjustment occurred in May 2025, when public transport fares were reduced in response to changes in fuel prices and government interventions.

However, the GRTCC says ongoing economic pressures, compounded by deteriorating road infrastructure, have made a fare increase unavoidable.
