The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has strongly condemned offensive social media comments made by individuals believed to be affiliated with the party, following the tragic Z-9 military helicopter crash.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to the headquarters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Kodua described the comments, particularly from certain TikTok users, as “unfortunate, unacceptable, and completely unrepresentative of the values of the NPP.”
“In times of national tragedy, we must rise above partisanship and show solidarity,” he said, stressing that any remarks trivialising loss of life were deeply inappropriate.
“The NPP does not wish death upon anyone not even a political opponent. Such comments are dangerous and harmful to our democracy,” he said, stressing that any remarks trivialising loss of life were deeply inappropriate.
Mr. Kodua also acknowledged that inflammatory rhetoric had surfaced from both political sides and cautioned against politicising national tragedies.
“Some are accusing the NPP of orchestrating events, while others have made vile remarks suggesting more people should have died. These kinds of statements are toxic and must be condemned by all responsible citizens.”
He went on to offer a formal apology to the NDC and President John Dramani Mahama for any offensive comments made by individuals associated with the NPP.
“On behalf of the New Patriotic Party, if any statement from our side has caused pain or offence, I sincerely apologise to the NDC and to His Excellency President John Mahama. That does not reflect the position or principles of our party, and we strongly disassociate ourselves from such behaviour.”
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has confirmed the arrest of two individuals, ‘Fante Comedy’ and ‘Akosua Jollof’, for making threatening and inflammatory remarks about President Mahama.
In addition, the arrest of NPP activist Sir Obama Pokuasy is said to be part of a broader, intelligence-led operation targeting illegal possession and display of sophisticated weapons.
