Nkwanta SHS headmaster suspended for seeking public support for WASSCE candidates

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has instructed Solomon Sarpong Bagmae, the headmaster of Nkwanta Senior High School (SHS), to step aside with immediate effect.

This action follows allegations that he sought unauthorised public assistance to feed students currently writing their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

In a directive signed by Irene Jacquelina Attabra, the Acting Oti Regional Director of Education, Mr. Bagmae is accused of engaging the media on August 4, 2025, to solicit public support without the necessary approval from GES.

The GES has indicated that this decision aims to facilitate an independent and objective investigation into the situation.

Mr. Bagmae has been asked to relinquish all school property and administrative duties to the Regional Director of Education and is to refrain from making any public comments while the investigation is ongoing.

This comes after authorities from Nkwanta Senior High School, Community Senior High Technical School, and Kyabobo Senior High School in the Oti Region requested support to provide food for their WASSCE candidates.

This request was due to an increase in candidate numbers at these schools, a surge linked to the ongoing conflict in the region.

The unrest has led to significant disruptions in daily life and supply chains, creating substantial challenges for the schools, especially regarding food provisions.

Mr. Bagmae had voiced his concern for the students facing their final exams, noting that the growing number of candidates has stretched the school’s food resources, which could adversely affect the students’ focus and performance.

“With the right support, our students will be in a better position to face the WASSCE,” he stated.
