Return lost Ghana Cards to our offices — NIA urges public

Enoch Ben Sackey, the Western Regional Registration Officer of the National Identification Authority (NIA), has urged the public to return any found Ghana Cards that do not belong to them.

Speaking in Takoradi, Mr Sackey addressed rumors suggesting that lost cards could be used for transactions.

He assured the public that this is not possible because of the biometric verification system, which requires fingerprint authentication to ensure only the legitimate cardholder can use the card.

“If you find someone’s lost Ghana Card, please take it to the nearest police station or any NIA office. NIA officials can query the system to find the cardholder’s details and contact them for retrieval,” he said.

Additionally, Sackey announced that the NIA is now registering children under the age of 15 in the region.

He explained that while a mass registration drive has been temporarily paused, NIA offices remain open for parents and guardians to register their children.

This follows the commencement of the issuance of the printed backlog of Ghana cards in Greater Accra on April 7, 2025.

In a statement issued on Sunday, April 6, the authority said applicants who had been waiting for their cards since June 2023 would finally get them.

The NIA added that although new registrations and issuance remain free, services such as card replacement and updates to personal records are still subject to applicable fees.
