My victory is the Lord’s doing – Fmr. COCOBOD CEO

Story By: Salome Sakyi

After eight long years of legal battles, former COCOBOD CEO Dr. Stephen Kwabena Opuni has been acquitted, and he’s giving all glory to God for what he calls a divine deliverance.

Dr. Opuni marked both his personal victory and the resurrection of Christ during an emotional Easter Sunday service at the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Emmanuel Congregation in Dormaa-Babianeha, his hometown in the Bono Region.

Surrounded by family, friends, and key figures from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), including Bono Regional executives, Members of Parliament, and party supporters, Dr. Opuni expressed heartfelt gratitude for his freedom and vindication.

“This victory is not mine alone, it is the Lord’s doing. For eight long years, my family and I endured this trial, but through it all, my faith has been strengthened. Today, as we celebrate the resurrection of Christ, I also celebrate God’s deliverance in my life,” he said.

Dr. Opuni had been on trial for alleged financial malfeasance during his time at the helm of COCOBOD. In a landmark ruling last month, the High Court found that the state had failed to prove its case, leading to his full acquittal.

Dr. Opuni used the Easter service not just for thanksgiving, but to urge Ghanaians to uphold truth and avoid harmful speech.

“Let us be mindful of our words. False accusations and slander can destroy lives and families. We must uphold truth and justice in all things,” he cautioned.

Reflecting on the Cocoa Sector

Taking a moment to reflect on his time as CEO during President Mahama’s administration, Dr. Opuni drew comparisons to the state of the cocoa sector under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

He expressed concern over what he described as a decline and encouraged Ghanaians to judge the sector’s progress for themselves.

With his name cleared and faith renewed, Dr. Opuni says he’s ready to move forward in service to God, his community, and the nation.
