Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has accused the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration of worsening Ghana’s unemployment crisis through widespread dismissals in the public sector.
Speaking at a joint press conference held by opposition parties to protest the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, Afenyo-Markin alleged that the government’s actions have led to job losses across several sectors.
He claimed that instead of fulfilling promises to create employment, the NDC is contributing to rising joblessness.
“People who have been employed for over seven years were sadly asked to go home; some went into their offices, and they were sacked. Nurses who were recruited last year have been asked to go home; teachers who have been recruited have been sacked. That is the state of the NDC government for you,” he said.
According to the Minority Leader, the dismissals have primarily affected long-serving employees and newly hired professionals in health and education.
He further alleged that some of the dismissed workers are being replaced with NDC loyalists in key government institutions.
The press conference also addressed concerns about the independence of the judiciary following the suspension of Chief Justice Torkornoo.
Opposition members present described the move as politically motivated and a threat to democratic governance.
Afenyo-Markin urged the public to remain alert and hold the government accountable for its employment practices and treatment of state institutions.
