A man identified as Mohammed Ali has been sentenced to 10 years in prison with hard labour after being found guilty of robbery and illegal possession of firearms in Tumu, a town in Ghana’s Upper West Region.

His sentencing was delivered on Monday, August 11, by His Honour Jonathan Avoogo at the Wa Magistrate Court.

Ali’s arrest followed a road accident in Bugubelle on July 30, 2025, which unexpectedly led police to uncover more serious criminal activity.

According to a statement from the Upper West Regional Police Command, officers responding to the accident found ammunition and a weapon in Ali’s possession.

Upon interrogation, he admitted that the items were his and confessed to being involved in recent robberies in the area.

He also named several accomplices who remain at large. Investigators say efforts are ongoing to locate and arrest the others connected to these crimes.

Ali was charged with robbery, preparation to commit a crime, and unlawful possession of a firearm. He pleaded guilty to all charges, resulting in his conviction and sentencing.

The police have assured the public of their continued efforts to maintain law and order in the region.

“We are working tirelessly to ensure all those involved face justice. The safety of our communities remains our top priority,” a police spokesperson said.

Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity to aid in the arrest of the remaining suspects.
