The President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), Efua Ghartey, has called on legal professionals to pay close attention to the ongoing proceedings involving the possible removal of the Chief Justice.

She stressed the importance of ensuring transparency and fairness throughout the process.

Speaking at the GBA’s mid-year conference, Madam Ghartey described the situation as historic, noting that it presents a unique challenge to the legal community and the country at large.

She encouraged members of the Bar to actively engage the public by offering education and clarity about what the legal process entails.

“One such issue, which is currently on the lips of Ghanaians as a result of the publicity associated with the process triggered for the removal of the Chief Justice, is what is a prima facie case?” she asked.

She highlighted the need for legal professionals to not only observe the situation but to speak up when needed.

In her view, public confidence in the legal system depends on a process that is both fair and clearly understood.

In addition, the GBA is taking steps to advocate for the development of transparent rules for the removal of Article 71 office holders, including judges.

Madam Ghartey announced the Association’s intention to submit proposals aimed at removing any sense of arbitrariness and pushing for proceedings to be handled promptly and openly.

She believes the Bar has a duty to guide the nation through this unfamiliar territory with integrity and leadership.
