KNUST TEWU-GH declares strike over Council exclusion

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) branch of the Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH) has declared an indefinite strike in protest of its exclusion from the university’s governing council.

The strike was triggered by a decision from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to appoint a representative from TEWU-GH’s rival union, the Teachers and Educational Workers Union under the Trades Union Congress (TEWU-TUC), to the council.

TEWU-GH, which claims to represent the majority of unionised staff at KNUST, has condemned the move as unfair and a violation of its right to representation.

The union argues that GTEC’s decision undermines democratic principles and constitutes a deliberate act of marginalisation.

In a statement signed by Charles Arthur, Chairman of the KNUST branch of TEWU-GH, the union reaffirmed its commitment to due process and strongly opposed what it described as external interference in the university’s internal governance.

The statement indicated that the strike would continue until GTEC reverses its decision and restructures the council to ensure what the union considers fair and rightful representation.

This development is the latest in a series of long-standing disputes between TEWU-GH and TEWU-TUC at KNUST, with council representation remaining a key point of contention.

As the strike takes effect, the university community faces growing uncertainty, with students, staff, and administrators awaiting possible interventions to resolve the impasse and restore normal operations.
