Concerns over Ghana’s aviation safety have deepened after a Volta River Aviation helicopter, 9G-AFW, was forced to make an emergency landing for the second time in just two weeks.
The latest incident happened on the morning of Monday, August 11, 2025, in the Nkawkaw-Ampekrom area of the Eastern Region.
The Jet A-I helicopter was en route from Accra to Kumasi when it encountered harsh weather, prompting an unscheduled landing.
While no injuries were reported, the recurrence of emergency landings involving the same aircraft has alarmed the public.
This comes shortly after a tragic helicopter crash on August 6 that claimed the lives of eight people, including two government officials.
The timing of the two events has raised urgent questions about aviation oversight and aircraft maintenance standards.
An eyewitness in Nkawkaw described the moment the helicopter came down.
“I saw the helicopter moving in the sky slowly. It went up, came down a bit and moved backwards,” the resident said.
The aircraft eventually landed safely in the community, where curious onlookers gathered.
The first emergency landing involving 9G-AFW occurred in the Central Region just two weeks ago, coinciding with the fatal military crash.
The helicopter in both cases remained intact, but the repeated incidents have sparked debate and drawn calls for immediate review of safety protocols.
