GTEC goes after acting Registrar of TMPC over “Dr.” title

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has formally written to the Acting Registrar of the Traditional Medicine Practice Council (TMPC), Yakubu Tobor Yusuf, requesting clarification and documentation regarding his use of the academic title “Dr (MH)”.

In a letter dated October 13, 2025, GTEC indicated that it had observed his use of the title “Dr. (MH)” and confirmed that it had not authorised him to use this title.

Referencing Section 7(i) of the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023), the Commission stated that it is responsible for assessing and validating both domestic and international academic qualifications.

Consequently, it requires Mr. Yusuf to provide pertinent documentation for verification.

GTEC has requested the Acting Registrar to submit the full name(s) of the awarding institution(s), a copy of the relevant degree certificate(s), and a copy of the official academic transcript(s).

The Commission has instructed that should Mr. Yusuf fail to furnish the necessary documentation, he must promptly discontinue the use of the title “Dr.” in all contexts and representations, including official documents, professional profiles, websites, digital platforms, and letterheads.

This directive has also been forwarded to the Chief Director of the Ministry of Health for enforcement purposes.

GTEC further mandated that all documentation or confirmation regarding the withdrawal of the title should be submitted by no later than October 24, 2025, and encouraged Mr. Yusuf to fully engage with the process.
