The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has arrested the Director and Registrar of the Nyarkotey University College of Holistic Medicine and Technology, situated in Ashaiman, Greater Accra Region, for offering unaccredited academic programs and operating an unapproved health facility.
On Wednesday, July 30, 2025, officials from GTEC, alongside the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), took Dr. Ademan Tetteh, a director and co-owner of the institution, into custody.
The university registrar was also detained for further questioning.
This action followed the university’s failure to provide the necessary proof of accreditation for its programs.
Two other directors, Daniel Tetteh Boafo and Professor Nyarkotey Obu, were absent during the operation.
Investigations indicated that Dr. Tetteh was allegedly using an honorary doctorate title in a manner that has raised questions about its legitimacy.
In a statement to the media, Jerry Sarfo, GTEC’s Director for Corporate Affairs, reiterated the Commission’s commitment to enforcing adherence to accreditation standards.
“We have repeatedly urged institutions to adhere to regulatory requirements, yet some continue to violate these guidelines. Today’s action underscores our resolve to uphold the integrity of tertiary education in Ghana,” he stated.
Mr. Sarfo noted that further investigations would follow to clarify the legitimacy of honorary titles and the university’s operations. GTEC is determined to ensure quality education and safeguard students from unaccredited programs.
The suspects are currently assisting the police with investigations.
GTEC further urges the public to verify the accreditation status of any institution before enrolling.
