The government has instructed the Attorney-General to begin legal proceedings to dissolve the Board of Trustees overseeing the National Cathedral project.
The directive was announced by Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, during a press briefing on Friday, July 18, 2025.
He said the move is part of efforts to promote transparency and accountability in light of troubling findings from a Deloitte audit.
According to the audit, over $97 million has been spent on the project, which remains stalled. Of that amount, $58 million was previously disclosed, while an additional $39 million was paid to the contractor, Sir David Adjaye and Associates.
The Minister noted that costs continue to pile up daily despite the halt in construction since March 2023.
Kwakye Ofosu confirmed that the President has also ordered the immediate publication of the audit report to allow public scrutiny.
“We will put it out in various portals so that the public can have access,” he said.
The audit revealed that the project’s financial commitments far exceed earlier estimates, raising questions about procurement practices and contract terms.
The government believes the contract’s structure has left the state vulnerable to ongoing financial exposure.
This latest development signals a major shift in the future of the National Cathedral, once envisioned as a symbol of national unity.
