The government has decided to reassign Samuel Adom Botchway from his position as Registrar of the Births and Deaths Registry, following pushback from the Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG).
Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of State for Government Communications, made this announcement after CLOGSAG declared a nationwide strike in response to Botchway’s appointment.
During a meeting on February 11, 2025, the National Executive Council of CLOGSAG expressed concerns about the appointment of individuals with political ties to pivotal civil service and local government roles.
They pointed out that Botchway, who officially took office on February 12, 2025, was one such case, leading them to plan a nationwide strike starting Thursday, February 20, 2025.
However, Kwakye Ofosu announced on Friday, February 14, that the issue had been resolved.
“In the truest spirit of cooperation and understanding, we are happy to announce that the matter has been resolved and there will be no nationwide strike by CLOGSAG,” he stated.
He also referenced a similar situation from the previous administration, which is currently under judicial review.
“We have learnt that the precedent that was set by the outgone government of appointing a non-civil servant to that position remains a pending matter in the courts,” he added.
The government reiterated its dedication to collaboration and ensuring national stability. “The Government of President Mahama is committed to being receptive as we work together to reset our nation,” concluded Kwakye Ofosu.
This resolution highlights the government’s ongoing efforts to foster industrial harmony while responding to the concerns of stakeholders within the public service sector.
