The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has clarified that the participation of the Bar Council of England and Wales in its upcoming 2025 Annual Conference in Wa is entirely consistent with longstanding practice and should not be misinterpreted.
In a statement signed by GBA National President Efua Ghartey, the Association dismissed concerns over the Council’s involvement, stating that such collaborations with international legal bodies are routine and appropriate.
The GBA highlighted that the Bar Council of England and Wales also participated in its 2022 Annual Conference in Ho, underscoring a well-established tradition of engaging international partners.
“The GBA maintains professional relationships with several international legal bodies, including the African Bar Association, International Bar Association, Nigerian Bar Association, Sierra Leone Bar Association, Law Society of Kenya, Law Society of England and Wales, and the American Bar Association, among others. These institutions are regularly invited to attend GBA programmes,” the statement noted.
The Association reaffirmed its non-partisan status and commitment to upholding the Constitution and preserving the dignity of the legal profession.
The 2025 GBA Annual Conference, scheduled to take place in Wa, the Upper West Regional capital, is expected to draw participation from lawyers, judges, and international legal professionals.
