Ewurabena Aubynn wins Ablekuma North parliamentary seat

Parliamentary candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ewurabena Aubynn, has emerged victorious in the Ablekuma North Parliamentary race after today’s rerun in 19 polling stations.

She keenly contested with one term New Patriotic Party(NPP) Parliamentary Candidate Nana Akua Afriyie, polling 34,090 votes out of the 68,382 total votes cast..

Akua Afriyie also polled 33,881 across all 281 polling stations.

Aubynn’s win is seen as a significant achievement for the NDC, as the Ablekuma North constituency has always been a stronghold for the NPP.

This result is part of broader gains made by the NDC in the 2024 general elections, further solidifying their super majority position in Parliament.

The rerun came after months of contention that have left the constituency without a Member of Parliament, following the disruption of the original coalition process during the December 7 polls.

According to the Electoral Commission, the decision to conduct the rerun followed extensive consultations with the two major political parties involved, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Although the NPP disagreed with the rerun, the NDC demanded a complete exercise in all 37 polling stations, arguing that the scanned pink sheets used for collation were provided exclusively by the NPP after the original physical documents were destroyed by party supporters who stormed the collation centre.

They questioned the legitimacy of the scanned results.

The NPP, on the other hand, insisted that results from the three remaining polling stations should have been collated and a winner declared, pointing out that the NDC’s agents had already endorsed the scanned pink sheets in question.

After reviewing the evidence and verifying documentation, the EC confirmed that while all 37 scanned results were endorsed by agents from both parties, only 18 were also verified and confirmed by the presiding officers.

The Commission added that 18 polling stations would not require a rerun.

A few days before the election, the NPP leadership confirmed that they would not partake in the rerun with their candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie.

However, Akua Afriyie went ahead to contest in the election.

Her decision to contest against the party’s orders came after the High Court rejected her injunction application to stop the rerun of elections in 19 polling stations.

Afriyie had argued that the EC’s decision went against a High Court ruling from January 4, 2025, which instructed the Commission to finalise the results from 62 polling stations and announce a winner for the December 7, 2024, parliamentary elections.

Meanwhile, chaos erupted at several polling stations in today’s rerun, with unidentified assailants disrupting voting and assaulting several people including former Fisheries Minister Hawa Koomson.
