East Gonja has hidden tourist gems worth exploring — MCE

The East Gonja Municipality in the Savannah Region is home to a number of little-known but remarkable tourist sites, according to Municipal Chief Executive Kasim Yazid Rabiu.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by officials from the Ghana Tourism Authority and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Mr. Yazid highlighted the area’s untapped tourism potential.

Beyond Salaga’s better-known history tied to the trans-Atlantic slave trade, such as the Slave Market, Cemetery, and Wells, the MCE pointed to natural wonders that remain largely unexplored. One of the standout sites is where the Black Volta and White Volta rivers meet, a spot he says holds a rare natural phenomenon.

“We have the point where the White Volta and Black Volta meet, but strangely, when you fetch water from one and pour it into the other, it separates, it doesn’t mix. This is something unique and could attract tourists if properly developed,” Mr. Yazid explained.

He stressed that while East Gonja has rich tourism assets, the challenge lies in turning that potential into real development. He expressed hope that the presence of tourism leaders in the area would help draw attention to its needs.

GTA’s Deputy CEO, Gilbert Abeiku Aggrey Santana, pledged the Authority’s support in helping the municipality develop its tourism sites. He said the initiative aligns with national goals to boost local economies through tourism.
