DStv impasse: Minority pushes Sam George to resign

The Minority in Parliament is demanding the resignation of the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Sam Nartey George, accusing him of mishandling the standoff with MultiChoice, operators of DStv in Ghana.

At a press conference in Accra on Thursday, October 2, Deputy Ranking Member on the Communications Committee, Charles Owiredu, charged that the Minister had misled Ghanaians, wasted public resources, and abandoned his promise to secure a 30% reduction in DStv subscription fees.

“We of the Minority demand three things, first, that the Minister renders an unqualified apology to Ghanaians for the waste of time and resources. Second, that he refunds the levies imposed on DStv. And third, that he resigns or failing that, the President should remove him from office,” Owiredu said.

According to the Minority, the Minister shifted from his bold pledge of a 30% subscription cut to touting MultiChoice’s ongoing promotions as a “generational success,” a move they describe as a betrayal of public trust.

“Instead of answering legitimate concerns like why he prioritised MultiChoice’s PR campaign over his price-reduction agenda, or how much has been collected from fines, the Minister chose to attack the Minority Committee and ordinary citizens,” Owiredu said.

He noted that MultiChoice’s “Step Up” promotion has been running since January 13, 2025, allowing customers to upgrade at no extra cost, while decoder prices were slashed in July as part of a customer appreciation campaign.

Both offers, he argued, were routine marketing strategies rolled out in other countries not the result of any government negotiations.

“This is someone who failed to deliver on his promises and is now hiding behind corporate promotions,” he stressed.

He further accused the Minister of lacking “mental rigour” during committee sessions and even fabricating claims about negotiations.

Meanwhile, MultiChoice Ghana issued a clarification on Wednesday, October 1, after confusion over a new three-month promotion running from October to December 2025.

The company reaffirmed three key points:

  1. It fully supports the joint statement issued with Minister George and has begun implementing the DStv value upgrade.

  2. A review committee will reconvene in three months to assess the impact of the initiative.

  3. The upgrade applies to all customers new, existing, and returning without restrictions.

MultiChoice also apologised for a misleading FAQ on its website that created the impression of a contradiction with the government’s announcement.
