The Koforidua High Court has convicted Ernest Yaw Kumi, Member of Parliament for Akwatia in the Eastern Region, for contempt of court and has issued a bench warrant for his arrest after he failed to appear in court.
The conviction follows his disregard of an interim injunction issued on January 7, which prohibited him from being sworn in as MP-elect due to an ongoing legal dispute over his election.
However, Mr. Kumi defied the court order and took the oath of office in Parliament on January 6, 2025.
Presiding over the case, Justice Senyo Amedahe expressed concern over the MP’s continuous absence from court.
The judge also rejected a letter from the Minority Caucus in Parliament, which cited parliamentary duties as the reason for Mr. Kumi’s absence.
Justice Amedahe ruled that accepting the excuse would contradict the court’s authority and, therefore, dismissed it.
With the bench warrant now in place, law enforcement authorities are expected to ensure Mr. Kumi is brought before the court.
