Former Vice President and NPP Flagbearer for the 2024 elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is leading high-level efforts within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to secure the release of Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Chairman Wontumi has been in EOCO custody since Tuesday, May 27, 2025, as investigations continue into allegations of fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.
Though granted bail on Wednesday, May 28, to the tune of GH¢50 million, he remains in custody after failing to meet the bail conditions, a situation that has drawn criticism from party supporters and sparked political tension.
The bail terms have been described by Minority MPs as excessive and politically motivated, prompting a protest walkout in Parliament.
According to Greater Accra NPP Regional Chairman Divine Agorhom, senior party leaders, including Dr. Bawumia, are actively involved in efforts to free Wontumi.
“It’s not just His Excellency Dr. Bawumia, every senior member of the party is concerned. We are hoping EOCO will consider revising the conditions to make them more attainable,” Agorhom said.
He added that if bail terms are not adjusted, the party’s legal team may pursue a formal application to vary the conditions.
“If that is not the case, my understanding is that the council is considering legal avenues to vary the conditions. If all that fails, then we will have to pull resources and see what we can do to get him out,” he said in an interview with Citi News.
The NPP’s top brass, including its national leadership and parliamentary caucus, are reportedly united behind the push, signalling the importance of the matter within party ranks.
As the debate grows, the case continues to dominate public discourse, with political watchers closely monitoring both the legal proceedings and the party’s next moves.
