The Bawku Senior High School has been temporarily closed following the tragic killing of a third-year student, Hakim Kundima, in a suspected targeted attack on campus.
The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 26, when unidentified gunmen reportedly scaled the school’s perimeter wall, stormed the dormitory, and forcibly dragged Hakim outside before shooting him.
The attackers fled the scene immediately after the shooting. No arrests have been made as of this report.
Hakim’s elder brother, Tahiru Kundima, confirmed the incident to the media, stating that the Bawku Divisional Police Commander personally handed over the body to the family.
He suggested that the attack may be linked to the protracted Bawku conflict, which has fueled repeated violence in the region.
In response to the killing, Bawku Municipal Director of Education, Isaac Agbeko Azasoo, ordered the temporary closure of the school on Sunday, July 27, citing serious safety concerns for students and staff.
This latest tragedy follows a separate deadly incident at Nalerigu Senior High School also on the same evening where two students were shot and killed in a similar dormitory attack.
The back-to-back assaults have intensified fears over the safety of students in conflict-prone areas.
Authorities have launched investigations into both attacks, but as of now, no suspects or clear motives have been confirmed.
The growing insecurity in senior high schools across the region has prompted urgent calls for enhanced security measures to protect students and educational institutions from further violence.
