The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has commenced the three-day major decongestion exercise to evacuate street traders from the Central Business District (CBD) and other pavements in the capital.
The ongoing exercise intends to restore order and improve sanitation in the market and the streets.
In the early hours of Tuesday, May 20, 2025, AMA task forces, with support from the Ghana Police Service, carried out a coordinated operation to dismantle makeshift stalls, unauthorised kiosks, and remove vendors who had taken over pavements and roadsides across key parts of the CBD.

The first phase of the exercise is focused on areas surrounding the AMA Head Office, including Kinbu Road to Railways, ECG Junction to the King Tackie Tawiah Statue, and Opera Square through to Adabraka.

The team is planning to move to Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Kaneshie Market and other places later in the day and in the coming days.
