The Accra High Court has warned it may dismiss the jury currently assigned to the retrial of Gregory Afoko if the Attorney-General does not decide on the case by the next hearing.
This comes after prosecutors informed the court, they needed more time to complete a review of the case involving Gregory Afoko and Asabke Alangdi.
This is the second time they’ve asked for an adjournment as they consider whether to proceed with the retrial or drop the charges.
Justice Marie-Louise Simmons urged the Attorney-General’s office to speed up its decision-making process, pointing to the emotional toll the delay is having on the accused.
“The accused remains anxious not knowing his fate,” Justice Simmons told the courtroom.
She added that if no decision is made by the next hearing on July 15, 2025, she will be left with no choice but to dissolve the jury.
Outside the courtroom, Gregory Afoko expressed his gratitude to the Attorney-General’s office for reviewing the matter and appealed for his release, saying he hopes the facts speak for themselves.
Afoko is accused of collaborating with Asabke Alangdi in the murder of Adams Mahama, the former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
In April 2024, a jury found Alangdi guilty of conspiracy, leading to a death sentence.
Afoko, however, was not convicted after a 4–3 split decision, prompting the call for a retrial. Alangdi has since appealed his conviction.
With the retrial in limbo, all eyes are now on the Attorney-General to determine the next steps.
