Six crew members of a fishing vessel who were kidnapped a month ago by pirates off the coast of Benin have been released.
The victims of the incident, five Koreans and a Ghanaian were taken hostage by the pirates on June 24, 2020, when their Ghanaian Flag fishing vessel Panofi Frontier was attacked while fishing in the Benin’s waters.
Although information regarding their release is scanty, Citi News report referred to sources within the Ghana Armed Forces who have confirmed the release.
According to the report, the five Koreans are at the Korean embassy and the Ghanaian at the High Commission in Nigeria.
The Gulf of Guinea which is made up of the maritime area located in the western part of the African continent seems to be the hotspot for piracy resulting in the prevalent piracy attack affecting countries including Ghana.
According to the International Maritime Bureau, the total number of piracy attacks around the area in 2019 which was twenty one was an improvement of the total number of attacks in 2018 which was 31.
