Economic Fighters League wants CHRAJ investigation into Ashaiman lockdown ‘murder’

The EFL indicated it trusts the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to do a better job.

The military command has said the deceased as killed after a solider’s gun had accidentally fired.

A statement suggested Eric Ofotsu was involved in narcotics and struggled with the soldier who has since been withdrawn from lockdown operations.

But eyewitnesses and family members have angrily rejected these two claims.

The Economic Fighters League sends its condolences to the family of Mr. Ofotsu who was murdered by a military officer on Sunday, 5th April 2020 in Ashaiman.

According to residents, Mr. Ofotsu was a mentally challenged young man who took the market as his home. On Sunday, an altercation ensued between him and a military officer. Eye witnesses recount that Mr. Ofotsu was not armed and that the soldier pointed the gun at him and shot him to death instantly.

Even though the Ghana Armed Forces has indicated that they have began investigations into the matter, we call for an independent body such as CHRAJ to investigate this gross human rights violation.

We remind the uniformed forces that their duty is to protect the people and not to kill them and that we are all in the same class fighting for survival in a system that is designed to make only a few rich.

In conclusion, we reiterate our call for all Ghanaians to continue to abide by proper health emergency measures to protect themselves and prevent the spread of the Coronavirus.

May the soul of our brother rest in peace.

Signed.
Hardi Yakubu,
Fighter-General.
