A young okada rider has lost his life in a road accident involving a heavy-duty trailer at Suame Maakro in the Ashanti Region.

The incident occurred on the afternoon of Saturday, January 3, 2026, along a section of the road affected by ongoing construction works.

The victim, believed to be in his twenties, was riding alongside a trailer loaded with soya beans when the accident happened.

Witnesses say the motorcycle was moving close to the long vehicle when a metal hook attached to the side of the trailer reportedly caught the rider and pulled him under the wheels.

The rider died at the scene before help could arrive.

Police officers who later visited the area secured the scene and arranged for the body, which had not yet been formally identified, to be transported to the mortuary for preservation and identification.

Residents who gathered at the scene expressed concern about safety conditions around the Suame Four Tier Interchange project.

Many say the narrow diversions, dusty surfaces, and uneven roads have made the stretch dangerous, especially for motorcyclists and pedestrians.

Speaking to reporters, one resident said, “We have witnessed many accidents here since the construction started, and today we have lost a life”.

“The road has become very difficult to use, and we hope the work is completed soon to prevent more tragedies.”

The accident has renewed public pressure on authorities to improve safety measures around the construction zone.

Road safety observers note that limited space, close interaction between heavy trucks and motorcycles, and unstable road surfaces increase the risk of serious crashes in such areas.

The incident comes weeks after protests by traders and artisans in Suame over dust pollution and poor road conditions, despite earlier assurances from city authorities.
