A South African national has been arrested by the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) for allegedly attempting to smuggle more than 30 kilograms of cannabis into Ghana.

The suspect arrived on a flight from Thailand on November 10 and was apprehended following a tip-off that prompted officials to conduct a detailed search of his luggage.

The banned substance was discovered neatly packed in vacuum-sealed parcels hidden among his personal items.

In a surprising turn of events, an airline staff member stationed at the airport was also detained for allegedly helping the suspect evade standard security checks.

According to NACOC, early investigations point to a coordinated plan between the foreign traveller and the airline employee to smuggle the drugs into the country.

Both individuals are currently in custody and are cooperating with investigators.

A senior NACOC officer shared that the Commission remains resolute in tackling drug trafficking through intelligence-led operations and collaboration with security partners.

“No one is above the law, and anyone involved in drug-related offences will be prosecuted to the fullest extent,” the officer said.

NACOC also reassured the public that it continues to strengthen its surveillance systems at entry points to prevent similar incidents in the future.
