Renowned Economist and Political Risk expert Dr. Theophilus Acheampong has been appointed as a Technical Advisor at the Ministry of Finance.
This appointment enhances the government’s economic management team with a seasoned perspective during a period of changing global and domestic fiscal circumstances.
Dr. Acheampong is well recognised in Ghana’s media and policy circles for his incisive, data-driven analysis. He has dedicated over a decade to influencing national discussions on public finance, energy, governance, and economic reform.
For many, his move into a formal advisory position is viewed as a natural progression from the analytical contributions he has consistently made to institutions both locally and internationally.
Dr Acheampong brings over 15 years of experience in the fields of energy and extractives, fiscal policy, and political risk.
He has successfully delivered or co-led over 60 consultancy projects worldwide, assisting development finance institutions, international development agencies, private equity firms, and multinational corporations.
His expertise encompasses economic and financial modelling, integrity risk assessments, and sustainable development.
He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Aberdeen, where he specialised in upstream fiscal regimes and energy systems modelling.
Additionally, he obtained an MSc in Energy Economics and Finance from the same university and a BSc in Chemical Engineering from KNUST. Currently, he is pursuing an MSc in Taxation at the University of Oxford.
In the field of academia, Dr. Acheampong serves as an Adjunct Professor at the Universities of Dundee and Aberdeen in the United Kingdom, as well as at the University of Ghana and the University of Energy and Natural Resources.
His contributions to teaching and research have significantly influenced the development of emerging professionals in policy and economics.
Dr. Acheampong’s impact reaches various global policy platforms. He holds the position of non-resident fellow at both the European Council on Foreign Relations and IMANI, and he is a member of the boards of Natural Resource Charter Limited and the African Council in the UK.
In the private sector, he leads Research and Markets at the Critical Minerals Africa Group.
