Fresh robbery sparks fear on Wassa–Bekwai road

Tension is mounting among traders and drivers who use the Wassa–Sefwi Bekwai road in Ghana’s Western North Region after another violent robbery on Thursday night.

The attack, which happened around 9 p.m. on October 23, 2025, is the third incident reported along the same stretch in recent months.

Traders returning from the Wassa Ayiem, Sraha, and Juabo markets were ambushed by a group of about six armed men between Sefwi Bekwai Baakokrom and Muoho.

Witnesses say the robbers fired shots to stop vehicles before stealing money and goods. The attackers then disappeared into the nearby bush.

On the same night, another robbery took place between Wassa Ankwaaso and Sefwi Humjabrɛ. A man travelling in a brand-new, unregistered four-wheel drive was shot, and his vehicle was taken before being abandoned by the roadside.

Residents believe the robbers often strike after rainfall, taking advantage of poor visibility and the reduced presence of police patrols.

“They took everything from us. We’re scared to drive at night now because it keeps happening whenever it rains,” said a frightened driver who survived the attack.

Traders and drivers are appealing to the Western North and Western Regional Police Commands to increase patrols and provide round-the-clock security on the Wassa–Bekwai road, especially at night and during rainy weather.

Police in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality are yet to release an official statement on the incident.
