Serenity has returned to Garu in the Upper East Region after a tragic shooting incident on Monday that resulted in the deaths of four individuals, including the headmaster of Garu D/A Basic School.
The headmaster was among those who were fatally shot when armed assailants opened fire in the community.
“The headmaster was not even at the NHIS office where the gunmen reportedly attacked. He was walking, probably from or towards the school, when he was shot,” Albert Sore reported in an interview monitored by The Ghana Report.
The assailants, believed to be four armed men on two motorbikes, reportedly stormed the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) office in Garu, firing indiscriminately before fleeing the scene.
Sources indicate that the gunmen discharged multiple rounds in the community during their escape, instilling fear among residents and prompting many to seek safety.
While calm has been restored, school activities at Garu D/A Basic School have been halted following directives from the District Education Directorate due to the trauma experienced by students who witnessed the event.
“Because of the trauma some of the students went through when their headmaster was shot, they have been asked not to come to school today,” the report added.
Security forces have since increased patrols in the area, and investigations are ongoing to determine the motive behind the attack and to identify the perpetrators.
Residents have urged for a heightened police presence to ensure their safety and to prevent any further violence in the district.
