A fire broke out on Monday morning at a section of the Greenhouse Factory in Shai Hills, prompting a swift response from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

In a statement shared on its official Facebook page, the GNFS confirmed that teams from four fire stations, Gbetsile, Devtraco, Tema Metro, and Motorway, had been deployed to bring the situation under control.

Described as a “serious” incident, firefighters have been working rigorously to contain the blaze.

The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time. Authorities have not yet confirmed if there were any injuries or fatalities, and an assessment of the damage is still underway.

This incident adds to a concerning rise in fire outbreaks across Ghana. In 2024 alone, the country recorded 6,436 fire incidents, representing a 7.8 per cent increase from the previous year.

The Greater Accra Region topped the list with 1,309 cases, followed closely by the Ashanti Region with 1,145.

Experts point to multiple factors behind the spike, including dry weather conditions, limited fire safety compliance, and the growth of informal settlements due to increased rural-urban migration.

Despite the rising numbers, the GNFS has made significant efforts to protect lives and property.

“In the face of increasing incidents, our teams have managed to save over GH¢550 million worth of property this year,” said a spokesperson for the service.

The GNFS continues to urge the public to take fire safety seriously as the harmattan season approaches.
