Homowo Festival: Police probe bloody clashes in Sowutuom and Anyaa

The Accra Regional Police Command has initiated an investigation into the violent incidents that disrupted this year’s Homowo Festival in Sowutuom and Anyaa on Saturday, August 30, 2025.

According to reports, the clashes occurred during the customary sprinkling of Kpokpoi when supporters of two rival chiefs encountered a misunderstanding.

This moment of tension quickly escalated to gunfire, resulting in chaos at the festival grounds.

Tragically, three individuals, identified as Abubakar Ramadan Sarbah, known as Nii Kwashiebu, Theophilus Nii Amu Kwadjan, and Joseph Shaibu Dodoo, lost their lives due to the violence. Additionally, four others were injured.

Victims including Enoch Amevor, Samuel Adjei, Nathaniel Doku, and Frederick Lartey, also known as Nii Obrafour, were taken to medical facilities such as Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and Ridge Hospital for urgent treatment.

The bodies of the deceased have been moved to the Police Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

In response to the unrest, police have deployed additional personnel to help restore order in the affected communities.

Intelligence-led operations aimed at identifying and apprehending those responsible for the violence are also ongoing.

Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, issued a statement urging traditional leaders, elders, and their supporters to adhere to the established security arrangements and to refrain from actions that may jeopardise public peace.

The Homowo Festival, an annual celebration by the Ga people, is traditionally a time for thanksgiving and reflection on their victory over famine.

Sadly, this year’s festivities were marred by tragedy as security agencies worked diligently to prevent further unrest.

Similarly, in Teshie, two fatalities were reported following violent clashes associated with this year’s celebrations.
