The Ghana Police Service has arrested 27 male suspects during a major crackdown on illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, at Ankaase Gyadam, located near Asamang Tamfoe in the Eastern Region.
This intelligence-led operation took place on Friday, July 25, 2025, and focused on various illegal mining sites where the suspects were found actively involved in unlawful practices.
According to a statement from the police, there were attempts by some individuals to hinder the operation, with officers facing aggression as they were threatened with machetes and other weapons in an effort to resist arrest.
The operation also yielded a substantial seizure of equipment, including 11 excavators, 1 bulldozer, 1 pump-action shotgun, 3 saloon vehicles, 1 Mitsubishi pickup truck, 1 pick loader and several water pumping machines and various mining tools.
All suspects are currently in police custody, assisting with ongoing investigations.
The confiscated equipment has been secured for further examination.
This operation is a key part of the ongoing campaign to combat illegal mining, which has led to significant environmental damage throughout various regions of the country.
