Ellen DeGeneres made her first public appearance in the UK since relocating from the US.
She revealed that the move became permanent the day after Donald Trump’s re-election, saying life feels “better” in the UK, highlighting its charm, politeness, and the simpler rural lifestyle she’s embraced in the Cotswolds.
Initially planning a part-time stay, Ellen and her wife, Portia de Rossi, decided to remain after waking up to distraught messages from friends. They’ve since experienced snow, raised chickens, and briefly kept sheep.
Ellen shared concerns about LGBTQ+ rights in America, particularly the push to reverse same-sex marriage laws by groups like the Southern Baptist Convention.
She and Portia are considering remarrying in England as a form of protest. She expressed disappointment that her coming out in 1997 didn’t encourage more celebrities to follow suit, acknowledging ongoing fear within the entertainment industry.
Though progress exists, she feels society still struggles to accept diversity.
Addressing workplace misconduct allegations that led to the end of her long-running talk show in 2022, Ellen admitted to being blunt but rejected claims of being “mean,” calling them clickbait.
She reflected on the unfair scrutiny women face for being direct and spoke candidly about the hurt caused by the backlash.
Despite leaving television, Ellen misses hosting and would love to do a British talk show, though she doubts the format’s relevance in today’s media landscape.
For now, she’s enjoying her new life, though she admits she’s a little bored and unsure of her next move.
