Assembly Members across Ghana have begun receiving monthly allowances totalling GHC1,300 each for April and May 2025.
The initiative forms part of a broader commitment to enhancing local development and service delivery.
At a press briefing in Accra on July 14, 2025, Local Government Minister Ahmed Ibrahim announced the disbursement of GHC23.6 million to 9,085 Assembly Members.
The payments, drawn from budget allocations for the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, reflect their growing responsibilities in community monitoring and oversight.
“This is to equip them with financial resources and logistics to deepen monitoring of all government projects and programmes being implemented within their electoral areas,” Minister Ibrahim explained.
He acknowledged long-standing issues with the centralisation of resources, which have often stalled progress at the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assembly levels.
As part of the 2025 Budget, the government allocated GHC100 million to the Ministry, with GHC25 million released in June to support logistics and operational needs.
