Church on Lashibi Ramsar Site given one week to vacate

Occupants of the House of Gilgal Prayer Ministry in Lashibi have been given a one-week deadline to vacate the premises ahead of a planned demolition.

The directive is part of a broader demolition exercise led by the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC) to reclaim encroached portions of the Ramsar site.

The demolition effort targets buildings constructed in waterlogged areas, aiming to restore the Ramsar site, which plays a vital role in flood prevention and serves as a sanctuary for local wildlife.

The church, which has occupied the site for about five years, is believed to be the oldest structure in the area. It had previously avoided demolition during similar exercises.

However, authorities say it now falls within the scope of ongoing efforts to clear the area.

On the second day of the GARCC operation, occupants were seen removing chairs and other belongings from the church.

Pastor Deborah Odumang, who leads the ministry, spoke to the media and asked authorities for a short grace period to vacate properly.

“Please be patient with us, we will leave,” she said, explaining that the church had planned to move years earlier but stayed when no action was taken.

Pastor Odumang also mentioned that she lives on the premises with her mother and sister, making them the main residents affected by the eviction.

She added that she was unaware the land was designated for conservation and not for residential or religious use.

Officials have urged full compliance with the eviction to avoid forceful removal and to support efforts to protect the environment and reduce urban flooding risks.
