Legon Cities have been relegated to the Division One League following a 4-1 defeat to Nations FC on Monday at the University of Ghana Stadium in Legon.
Kelvin Ampoful scored two goals, while Emmanuel Annor and Sadiq Alhassan also found the net, securing a comprehensive win for Nations FC, who have now taken the top spot in the league with three matches remaining.
Legon Cities’ relegation was confirmed, as they finished the season with just 25 points from 31 games. The club had a challenging campaign, struggling to keep pace with the title contenders.
This relegation is a significant setback for Legon Cities, who were once the champions of the Ghana Premier League in 2016, previously known as WA All Stars.
The club was established in January 2006, supported by former Ghana FA President and former CAF First Vice President Kwesi Nyantakyi in Wa.
In December 2019, the club was sold and rebranded as Legon Cities FC. Despite a promising start with high-profile signings like Asamoah Gyan, the club’s fortunes declined, leading to their relegation this season.
