The immediate past President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Mr. Ben Nunoo Mensah, has officially handed over the reins of leadership to the newly elected President, Richard Akpokavie, following a brief but impressive ceremony at the Olympic House in Ridge, Accra, on Monday morning.
Mr. Nunoo Mensah, who served for eight years, transferred official documents, keys, and various items, including leftover sporting kits from the Olympic and Commonwealth Games, to Mr. Akpokavie, marking a smooth transition of power.
In his remarks, Mr. Nunoo Mensah urged the incoming administration to work hard to build on the achievements of his tenure, particularly highlighting the importance of continuing the OlympiAfrica Project at Amasaman. He congratulated the new leadership team and wished them success in their mandate to further advance Ghana’s sports.
Earlier in the ceremony, former Treasurer Mr. Frederick Acheampong formally presented all financial and accounting documents, as well as records of assets, to the new Treasurer, Mr. Evans Yeboah.
Accepting the handover, Mr. Richard Akpokavie expressed his commitment to maintaining and enhancing the legacies inherited. He appealed for support from the Board, sports federations, and the media to help reposition Ghanaian sports and the GOC at the highest level internationally.
Newly appointed Secretary General, Mr. Mohammed Muniru, also thanked Mr. Nunoo Mensah and his team for their service, assuring them that the GOC’s doors will remain open for advice and collaboration whenever needed to further the development of sports in Ghana.
The ceremony was attended by notable figures including Mr. Isaac Duah (former Assistant Treasurer), Mawuko Afadzinu (First Vice President), Ernest Danso (Third Vice President), Baba Fuseini (Deputy Secretary General), Nii Lante Bannerman (Assistant Treasurer), and Kamal Sulley (new Board Member).
