Afenyo-Markin praises NDC’s rebranding efforts

Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has praised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for successfully working on its public image and urged his own party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), to take similar steps as it prepares for the 2028 elections.

Afenyo-Markin said political branding often matters more than individual candidates, especially during presidential contests. He explained that voters tend to align with party identity and tradition rather than personal profiles.

“When going into a presidential election, it is not about the individual. Look at the history of those who went as independent candidates. In the end, it is the party brand that matters,” he said.

Afenyo-Markin acknowledged the NPP’s deep roots in Ghana’s political history, citing leaders like Busia, Kufuor, and Akufo-Addo as part of a long-standing tradition.

However, he noted that the NDC has made significant strides in reshaping its image, particularly among students, professionals, and academics.

He recalled how, during his university days, students hesitated to openly support the NDC. Today, he said, that stigma has faded.

He commended the NDC for its outreach efforts, especially on campuses, which have encouraged students to proudly identify with the party.

He also mentioned the NDC’s growing presence in professional circles, including the legal field and academia, once seen as NPP strongholds.

Mr Afenyo-Markin also encouraged the NPP to reflect on these changes and focus on winning back the trust of young people, professionals, and the broader electorate.

He believes rebuilding the party’s image now will prepare the ground for a stronger campaign in 2028.
