Accra High Court rules out motion against anti-galamsey protest

An Accra High Court has quashed a motion filed by the Ghana Police Service seeking to prohibit a planned protest against illegal mining in Ghana.

This latest development comes after the Assistant State Attorney David Bachem withdrew the injunction upon request by the Attorney General.

This decision by the court has paved the way for the anti-galamsey protest, which is scheduled for Monday, April 28, 2025, to kick off as planned.

Deputy Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Justice Srem-Sai, in a social media post, also highlighted that the government has withdrawn the legal application seeking to halt a planned protest against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

According to the convener of the protest, media personality Okatakyie Afrifa, it is expected to start from Obra Spot at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra, go through the Ring Road, and then end at the Liberation Square opposite the Jubilee House.

It is expected to commence at 2:00 pm on April 28, 2025, through to 12:00 am on April 29.

In the motion filed and subsequently withdrawn by the police, they had admonished the conveners of the planned protest to relocate the end point of the demonstration since the Liberation Square and the Jubilee House remain security zones.

The police also raised concerns regarding the timing of the demonstration, which they argue will cause serious road traffic in the city of Accra in terms of public order, inconvenience motorists, and disrupt the delivery of essential services.

Currently, the conveners are calling on the general public to join the anti-galamsey protest as scheduled.
