Make Ghana Premier League autonomous as soon as possible – Hearts, Kotoko to GFA

In a joint statement submitted to the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko have called for the Ghana Premier League (GPL) to be made autonomous as soon as possible.

The two most glamourous clubs in Ghana urged that an independent management team be entrusted with running the league, a reform they assert will enhance transparency and efficiency.

This proposal follows the tragic death of Francis Yaw Frimpong, known as Nana Pooley, who was fatally stabbed on February 2, 2025, during a league match between Nsoatreman FC and Kumasi Asante Kotoko.

The proposal to make the Ghana Premier League autonomous was mooted three years ago with a committee put together by the GFA.

The autonomous league proposal involves making the league independent from the direct management of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

This move aims to enhance professionalism and efficiency in league operations by allowing it to be run by an autonomous body.

The proposal has been discussed for several years, with initial plans suggesting it would commence in the 2022/23 season.
