Samuel Nartey George, the Minister-designate for Communication, Digitalisation, and Innovation, has assured that he will reintroduce the Ghanaian Family Values Bill in the 9th Parliament.

In an appearance before the Appointments Committee on Thursday, January 30, the minister nominee said the bill, which is against LGBTQ+ activities, is vital to the preservation of Ghanaian cultural values.

Stressing his firm support of the bill, he said its reintroduction is in sync with the will of the public.

“The people of Ghana have spoken clearly on this issue, and as their representative, I will ensure that their voice is heard. My position is that the bill is a critical part of our national lives and Ghanaian family values, and our innocent children must be protected.

“In this 9th Parliament, that bill will be reintroduced. Either as a private member bill or a government bill. I will work with the government; if it’s my bill, I will bring it back again,” Sam George stressed.

This comes after President Mahama argued that family values could be promoted through education and curriculum reforms and not only by passing legislation.

The parliament of Ghana passed the bill in February 2024, seeking to criminalise activities associated with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex (LGBTQ+) activities and promotion of such behaviours.

The bill sought to impose penalties on individuals who promote or fund LGBTQI-related activities and those who provide indirect support for such initiatives.

The bill sparked significant debate, with proponents arguing that protecting Ghanaian cultural and family values is crucial, which they claim are under threat from foreign ideologies.

Human rights activists and other individuals, however, described it as a violation of fundamental human rights, including freedoms of expression, association, and equality under the law.
