26-Year-Old Illegal miner allegedly shot dead by Suspected Armed Robbers

A 26-year-old illegal miner identified as Bernard Nti has been shot dead by armed robbers at Wassa Akropong in the Wassa Amenfi East Municipality in the Western Region.

Information gathered indicates that Bernard was with two Chinese nationals and a driver in a Toyota pickup on their way to a refinery to refine the gold they had mined. When two armed robbers on a motorbike attacked and started shooting at them, unfortunately for Bernard, he was shot in the head multiple times, leading to his death on the spot.

The remaining victims were able to flee.

It is reported that the armed robbers used a pump-action gun and a pistol during the shooting.

The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Wassa Akropong Government Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

In a similar vein, on Sunday, January 14, 2024, two persons, a male and a female died after an illegal mining pit where they were working collapsed on them at Ataase, a community near Nkonya in the Amenfi East Municipality of the Western Region.

According to an eyewitness, the deceased persons were in the company of other miners when the sad incident occurred.

“The man is from the community but the lady is a stranger; they were searching for gold when the pit collapsed. Over one hundred miners were at the site, but only the two were in the pit bringing out the load. They unfortunately could not survive when the pit caved in. Their bodies have since been retrieved and deposited at the Wassa Akropong Government Hospital for preservation and investigation,” the eyewitness stated.
