The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) in the Volta Region has assured families of a 25-year-old motorcyclist who was killed by an immigration officer of the service’s commitment to a fair investigation into the incident to ensure justice for the victim.
The late Christian Dagbey was allegedly shot in the ribs by one of the immigration officers stationed at the Honuta border in the Ho West District when he was accosted for transporting gallons of cooking oil from the Togo part of the Ghana-Togo border through one of the unapproved routes.
The unfortunate incident that occurred on the night of January 17, 2024, has left the bereaved family in unimaginable grief and bitterness.
According to the Assemblyman for the Honuta Electoral Area, the deceased, a 25-year Okada operator, was returning from Togo with gallons of cooking oil using an unapproved route but failed to stop when the officers approached him.
The suspect officer, identified as Isaac Oppong, has since been remanded into prison custody by a Ho Circuit Court after he was arrested and arraigned on Friday.
A delegation of officers from the Regional Command, led by ACI Noah Ahomka Yeboah, V/R Acting Commander, who visited the bereaved family in Ho on Monday, assured them of the service’s commitment to investigations and justice.
The body of the deceased has since been deposited at the Ho Teaching Hospital, with the accused expected to reappear in court in March while investigations continue.
Meanwhile, the Acting Volta Regional Commander of the Ghana Immigration Service, ACI Noah Ahomka Yeboah, has called for the collaboration of residents in communities along the Ghana-Togo border to help the service combat potential threats and crime on the borders.
According to ACI Yeboah, recent activities by insurgence groups within the sub-region require a more robust and appropriate strategy from the Ghana Immigration Service to protect the country’s territorial boundaries, thus the need for residents to cooperate and support the service in its efforts.
