Ghanaian gospel musician Cwesi Oteng has stated that because he supported President Akufo-Addo‘s Free Senior High School (Free SHS) initiative, Ghanaians have aligned him with the New Patriotic Party.

The ‘God Dey Bless Me’ singer, who threw his support behind Nana Akufo-Addo’s free SHS initiative prior to the 2016 and 2020 elections, has said he did so based on policies and not because he was a party member.

“Someone will look at me and frown because I support Free SHS,” he told Keely Jade Brewer on the Between Hours Show on Asaase Radio 99.5

Oteng explained that “I am not a politician; I only supported free SHS. And that led me to endorse the candidate who is enforcing it.

He explained that he believed Nana Akufo-Addo’s Free SHS policy was a good idea.

The gospel singer, who has come under serious criticism for supporting the initiative, said, “You go to a place only to realise that because you support free SHS, people act differently towards you.”

“The person has forgotten the impact of Free SHS.”

He added, “Shouldn’t we be free enough in Ghana to discuss ideas? We don’t have to agree on everything to respect each other.”
