BoG Demo: We won’t change routes, no one can stop us – Minority

The Minority in Parliament has insisted that they will march along their proposed routes for the September 5 demonstration against the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG).

This comes after the police asked them to change their routes in the interest of public safety.

They had initially planned to start from the frontage of Parliament House and end on the Bank of Ghana premises.

But the police after a security assessment recommended that they commence the protest from the frontage of Parliament House through the Osu Cemetery Traffic Light and end at Black Star Square.

Reacting to the new development, the MP for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga said they would not heed the police directive.

“We find that unacceptable. We are going to march along the same route that we have proposed and they have the constitutional and legal responsibility to give us protection.”

He said there is no law that stops them from picketing the BoG premises so he does not see the need for the police to prohibit them.

“So if we cannot demonstrate there, we can not demonstrate anywhere,” Mr Ayariga.

The minority’s intended demonstration with other civil society organizations is in protest of the central bank’s alleged illegal printing of over GH¢80 billion for the Akufo-Addo government, which caused a hyperinflation rate of 54.1 percent.

According to the caucus, this has led to severe economic challenges for Ghanaians.

The demonstration also follows their demand for the resignation of Dr. Ernest Addison and his deputies over alleged mismanagement.
