Man, 25, jailed three years for stealing cooking equipment

A 25-year-old unemployed young man has been sentenced to three years in prison for stealing cooking equipment valued at GH₵1,450.

Ebenezer Bortey is said to have illegally entered the home of a bar attendant and caused damage to both the padlock and the door lock, which are estimated to have a combined value of GH₵200.00.

Bortey pleaded guilty to all charges of unlawful entry, causing unlawful damage, and stealing.

The court presided over by Mr Isaac Oheneba Kuffour, convicted Bortey of his plea and sentenced him accordingly.

Bortey has been sentenced to 12 months in prison for unlawfully entering and causing damage and a 36-month term for stealing.

“Sentences are to run concurrently,” the court said.

According to Police Sergeant Priscilla Avoga, the complainant was a bar attendant living in the Nungua Kpokeke area. The accused, who is now a convict, lived in the same neighbourhood.

The prosecution said the complainant left for work on July 24, 2023, at approximately 5:00 pm. Upon returning the following day at around 5:00 am, she noticed her door was damaged, and her room had been ransacked.

The complainant conducted an inventory check and realized that her blender, worth GH₵400.00, microwave, worth GH₵500.00, rice cooker, worth GH₵280.00, gas cylinder, worth GH₵150.00, and a set of bowls, worth GH₵120.00, were missing.

According to the prosecution, the complainant alerted others and subsequently learned that the suspect had been apprehended for another theft that occurred in the vicinity.

The prosecution added that the complainant hurried to the location of the apprehension and discovered her stolen belongings in the suspect’s possession.

The complainant then accompanied the suspect, who was carrying her property, to the police station, where she filed a complaint.
