It is reported that former Minister Sherry Ayittey is dead.
She was a key member of the National Democratic Congress(NDC), the main opposition party in Ghana.
She is a former National Women’s Organizer and currently a Vice Chairperson of the party.
Whilst the party was in government, she served in several capacities, the last being the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture under the John Mahama administration.
She was an active member of the 31st December Women’s Movement, which promoted women’s agenda.
The movement that was operational during Jerry Rawlings’ rule from 1981 to 2001 had the then First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, as its president. When the latter reduced her tempo in theIr political tradition, Madam Sherry Ayittey drew even closer to her political stock.
A vocal politician, often on the campaign trail of her party, Madam Sherry Ayittey was an indispensable figure in the scheme of things. She had often spoken about affirmative action on women that seeks to promote gender equality and mainstream the subject in national affairs.
Her death adds to losses in human capital that had hit the National Democratic Congress in the past few years.
